Search / indexing directories & files

I have a hosted site on a RH 6.2 box. One of the options they provide is a search engine for sites. It works fine but seems to be an all or nothing deal. Is there a way to exclude a directory or a file from being included in the search of a hosted site?

Some indexing software allows you to use directives in the meta information to tell the search engine to exclude pages.  Some engines also support files like the robot.txt.  They also sometimes support manually hinting pages for relevancy, again using a custom meta tag.  Ask for information about the engine from your hosting company, and see if any of these options are available to you.
