Hi. I have acquired a macintosh beige G3 computer.  However all that it came with was an ethernet card installed. I am interested in purchasing a modem for this computer.  It is running Mac OS X with 320 MB of Ram.  Where can i find out what modems i could get that would be supported by os X. i tried a usb modem i have from a pc, but apparently not many usb modems are supported right now.  I guess then id like to go with an internal pci card modem.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

If i recall right those beige G3s didnt even have a USB port so a USB modem wont do you much good. OSX does support USB modems, it HAS to considering thats the ONLY type of 3rd party modem you can plug into a new Mac aside from a PCI modem. For that machine you either need to put a USB card in it and plug in a USB modem, or get a PCI card modem which i dont recommend at all. The USRobotics modems tend to be good, and so do the Supras.

yes, i did put in a USB card, and that was how i attached my usb modem, but it does not work.  I own a supra max 56k usb modem, but the problem is that it is not supported by os x. supra is not going to write the drivers for it either. i spent quite a bit of time with the tech people there and came to the conclusion that it was necessary to buy a different modem.  Can anyone suggest an exact modem that they know works or will work, or where i can go to find an apple website that says exactly what would work. And also why would you recommend a usb modem over a pci modem? thanks~

I say USB for several reasons:

1)You can see the lights and diagnose problems easier.
2)Its easier to detach it and move it to different computers.
3)Internal modems tend to be harder to find.
4)A USB modem doesnt suck up another PCI slot.

OS X comes with scripts for the following modems (Again, i would recommend the USRobotics or Supra, both of which have scripts here):

Don't touch US Robotics TA ISDN though as there is 0 support for OS X, it'll pick it up but you won't get it to work on 128K.

Sincerely,
