Explorer.exe Win2KSP2

When I open Windows Explorer, as soon as I try to expand "My Computer" to show drives etc, I get "explorer.exe has generated errors and will be shut down" etc etc.  Then desktop reloads.  Win2K is SP2, IE6, everything from Windows Update and Office Update has been done.  I can browse the disks from My Computer.  Any common causes?  I have looked for issues with HP, Creative, ATI etc (all up-to-date drivers) but can't seem to track this one down.....

Cheers

When was the last time you scanned for virus's?

When was the last time you scanned the disk for errors?

Also try this. Go to Start > Run and type in SFC /scannow and see if it corrects the problem.

A quick look at the MS Knowledge Base shows these programs can cause this:
Norton CleanSweep
Caere OmniPage Pro v9.0
Allaire Homesite
Cold Fusion

Are any of these installed?

Virus software is updated daily and e-mail comes through corporate scanner - but I scanned the whole disk anyway, no viruses found.

Scandisked no errors

Ran SCF, unfortunateley no change.

I have seen the MS documents, none of those products have been installed.  This PC has been reloaded with fresh Win 2K recently, but the error just started yesterday......

Is it likeley to be a dll that is causing this?
Have you tried reloading SP2? If you've made any other changed that might make a difference
Yes, I hoped that would do it as well, but tried it this evening - no change.  One thing I have noticed just now is that the problem occured, then the desktop reloaded, then tried again and no error.  Restarted PC and error back.  I'm wondering if another program terminates when the error occurs - and that program is conflicting.......  Could be Black Ice, HP printer software, Sophos a-v, Creative SB Live.  I'll have to try stopping these to see if there is a conflict.
Which is the most recently installed? I'd start with that one first.
Also, do you need BlackIce if you're behind a corporate scanner? That and your Anti-Virus software would be the leading candidates to interfere with your OS.
This is my home PC - I use Black Ice because I use a regular ISP for Internet, and dial into the company LAN for e-mail which comes through the scanner.  But I have excluded the LAN IP range from Black Ice.....  I think Black Ice was last, but I will try turning off the a-v and Black Ice, maybe try uninstalling and see where that goes......
If it turns out to be BlackIce, might want to give ZoneAlarm a try
