Windows 2000 not shutting down nor rebooting !

Hi,
I got an Aopen KT33 motherboard and i used to have windows me also, there it would shut down and restart just fine But since i installed win2k on my computer it doesn't work anymore, it says windows is shutting down like it should to but at the moment where the computer should fall out i get a black screen with a prompt (can't type anything doh and ctrl+alt+del doesn't work).

I've got no idea what the problem could be

Also on another pc i had i had to choose some setting in power management to get it to shutdown and reboot, but there i had the message "it's now safe to turn off the computer" and i don't get that on this pc either so i got absolutly no id what could be wrong! everything else works fine doh

so please help
thanks!

Joyrider,

Open Regedit from the Start | Run

Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Look for the key in the right pane: PowerdownAfterShutdown

Change the value to 1 and then save and reboot.

Hi,

i've looked at all of the urls posted , the reg thingie didn't worked as i expected it wouldn't :(

as for the knowledge base urls, APM isn't used cause APCI is so i couldn't have problems nor enable APM  (i looked for that)

i also tried to change the apci pc setting to a standard pc and maybe then there would be the option for APM enabled but it wasn't so indeed it did not work !

i'm currently at home & the pc is a friends one, he's going to go to the shop with it & let them have a look !

Joyrider, have you installed the drivers for the motherboard?

Also, has the motheboard's BIOS been updated?

joyriderAuthor Commented:
yes both has been done nothing (bios has APCI enabled)

Okay, tell me about the machine. Did you build it or have someone build it for you? Did this just start, or has it been this way for a while. I'm searching for changes here!

the pc was fine,

he just came back from the shop for a mem upgrade and they updated his bios also. He asked me to install win2k on his system cause win me kept crashing (but it did reboot etc)

so i went and install win2k everything is working ok except the not shutting down / restarting

There are no problems in deveice manager so i really don't know what's the problem these things normally should work themselves out :)

anyway he called the shop and they said it could be anything and they would have a look to see if they could find it so now were waiting on what they have to say

Did you upgrade from ME or do a fresh installation?

Fresh of course :)

What software is installed on this machine? Did it shutdown correctly before you began loading software?

Let us know what has been the problem.

joyriderAuthor Commented:
it didn't shutdown / restarted from the moment win2k was installed so it's not a driver or software problem

i'll let u know what it was as soon as i know more of it :)

Joyrider, it could very well be a driver.

What's showing in the event logs?

What's going on?

he got his pc back and they told him it couldn't be solved ???????

find it rather weird that they send it back with this kind of explanation

hmm haven't / can't check the event logs cause i'm not with the person of the pc atm ;)

i think we'll have to keep it like this :/

It sounds as though they do not have an updated BIOS with the correct ACPI code.
