Remote Access to Oracle database over vpn through cable internet

I have installed safenet vpn and connected to my office from home over cable internet. After setting up the DSN and WINS IP addresses I am connected to the office network. But when I configure oracle alias it does not see the listener. What could be the problem.

TIA

If you are certain about the configuration, and it sounds as though you are, then my GUESS is that port 1521 is being filtered.

To verify this, get a shareware or freeware port scanner from the internet (try http://www.dataset.fr) and scan the open ports on your Oracle server. If port 1521 fails, then it is being blocked and you may need to go to your VPN provider to unblock it.

Is safenet a provider or a piece of software? If it's software is it configurable at the port level?

Good luck.

First check to make sure that safenet passes port 1521, the SQLnet port . . . verify your tnsnames.ora if you use that to resolve the oracle instance name.

I guess I should first ask what error message are you getting? Listener not found? Unable to connect?

Good luck.

Tnsping gives error:
TNS-12541: TNS:no listener
TNSNAMES.ORA shows correct IP address and port 1521.
I am able to ping the IP address of server.
How can I make sure that safenet passes port 1521.

The suggestion helped me work towards the right answer. I figured that the problem was because ping hostname was giving me wrong ip address of my office intranet host. I should have used hostname.company.com as host. Because of wrong IP address obtained via the hostname without suffixing it with company.com, the tnslistener was not found.

However I did use the scanport software to see that the port was not listening on the wrong IP address that was obtained by translating the hostname.

Thanks again for you help.
