asked on

windows 2000 and aspi layers

I've recently upgraded my daughter's computer to Win2000 and then had to by the new version of Roxio's Easy CD creator 5 Platinum, which is supposedly compliant.  We have a HP plus9100i CD RW.  When we try to write to a CD-R, we get midway through the write process, then get the errors:
"E80041927 Track write error ASPI failure T7121"
"E80041934 Trach write error Flush Failed T7127"
"E80041927 Track write error ASPI Falilure T7121"

I spoke to tech support at Roxio who said that the problem is the the ASPI layers from the old operating system (win 95)is interfering.  He said the only way to solve the problem is to unistall Win2000, reformat the hard disk and then do a new install.

Isn't there a work-around?  Can I "delete" the old ASPI information and reinstall WIN2000?  He also said this problem would occur with any software that uses ASPI layers. Is this true?

Thanks
Jason

I can verify that Roxio 5 and the HP 9100i work under Win2000 since I have exactly those components.

A couple of things:

1) How did you get to W2K?  Upgrade or new-install?  If you upgraded, you may be out of date on your W2K drivers for the CD/RW.

2) Did you install SP2 for W2K?  You should do this as there are some CD-RW issues with non-SP2 W2K.

3) I needed to install a firmware update to my HP 9100i right after I got it so that it would work with Adaptec EZCD 4 and W2K.  It's on the HP support site.
I have no problems burning (but my configuration differs a little), and I have the following ASPI components on my system (just search for ASPI in the windows system dir, including hidden files!)

ASPI32.SYS, WINASPI.DLL, WNASPI32.DLL
All by Adaptec Inc., Ver. 4.6.0.1019

Maybe this helps.
You might try using ForceASPI. This set of scripts forces the ASPI layer to a known stable version and will install the latest ASPI drivers.  I have used this on many occasions and it cured a lot of my Buffer Underruns and Failures.

This even fixed the lack of an ASPI Layer in Windows XP.

If that link doesn't work just search the internet for ForceASPI.

Sorry for the delay in this comment, but I don't live with my daughter anymore, so I had to go for a visit to try these suggestions.
I tried ForceASPI. It correctly identifies win2000 and makes it's changes (I presume), but the CD-RW gives the same errors afterword.

Any other ideas/comments?  Do I need to reinstall Win2000, format my disk, then reinstall the program?
Jason
Jason,
Did you ever find a fix for this ? I'm having the same trouble after installing W2K when my NT installation fried.
Reformatting my HDD really isn't an option...

No, I never got it to work, though I tried all the suggestions and ran forceASPI.  I wound up getting another program. (HP DLA and some other)

I's suggest a PAQ and refund. There are a few valuable comments in here (especially johnsand's ForceASPI suggestion), but obviously they didn't solve the problem right.
