Mailmerge & Word

I would like to know how to create a Word document (even better use a template) and fill it with values from a notes database. Typical example would be to mark several people from a database with addresses and send them a prepared letter.
I suppose this can be done by mailmerge, so let notes create a mailmerge file somewhere, and then start word with the appropriate letter and mailmerge so that it creates the 'ready-to-print' version.
A related, but possibly different, questions would be how to keep track of this letter in the send-history of those people in the notes database, and how to find back the Word-letter you've send (how to store this link, or the whole document into the notes database).
