Windows 2000 CPU Problem

xgoo asked
Hi. Let me give a quik overview of what im using.

700mhz p3 Acer 737TLV Laptop
Windows 2000 5.00.2195
IE 6.0.26
x86 Family 6 Model 8 Stepping 3
130MB Ram

Heres the problem.
Just today I noticed that WORDS were huge on the net.
( from past experience it was from lack resources )

I looked at my task managers processor usage and it was bad.
It fluxuates from 0% to 100% in the red just from closing a window. It constantly jumps ( in red ) from 0% to 100% everytime i do something. Even when I dont do anything it still fluxuates from 0% all the way up to 12% in red. I know this isn't right. There is always a RED line present at all times across the cpu usage history. Ive been using win2k for about 6 months now and this is the only time ive had this problem.

My memory is fine there isn't any rapid jumps in that. It is just the processor usage that goes crazy.

Also, I found out that both my autoexec.bat and config.sys were completely empty and im not sure where to find a copy that suits 2k. Im not sure what is wrong but I've tried everything I know (closed all unused programs etc.) and still have the same problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Watch Question

Well xgoo this red line in the taskmanager is the Kernel processes..
first of all, see if you have any unusual services running.
second just as a caution check for any viruses with updated anti-virus software that you have...
third (not sure) check for any hardware related problems, like hard disk readings... run performance monitor and do a comparison between you existing log and the new one.. see how is the hardware working..

I hope this helps...
any information regarding these would be helpfull to anyone..

you said the words on the net look huge? do you have a scroll mouse? if so, hold the ctrl key while you scroll your mouse - you can zoom in/out.

as for CPU usage - I can make mine jump up to 15% just moving my mouse around, but even if I'm not, it's constantly fluctuating as the OS system does what an OS system does.  also it jumps up to 100% on opening/closing anything - including the task manager itself!

have you noticed actual perfomance changes in your programs?

xgoo, do you have Office 2000, or possibly Word or Excel or one of the other parts of Office 2000? If you have any of these products, do you have Fast Find loading?

When you say that words are huge on the net are you sure that it is not your browser settings that are causing this?

If you use Internet Explorer click on the view menu and check the Text Size setting.  It ranges from Largest to Smallest and affects the way some web pages are displayed.

I had this problem with IE6 also.

CPU usage jumping to 100% is fairly normal.  It only becomes a worry if its constantly running at over about 80%, spikes up to 100% are to be expected through normal use.

Hope this helps.
