Toms disk is great! It fits on a disk, even if it seems not to. But you will probably have to make it on another machine.

http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/ From here you can find info on how to make your own installation.

You will have to dump Stacker.

But I would have continued running win311 and installed Opera for surfing and some good telnet/ssh applications (dont know anyone for 311) for communication with linux-machines.

krod4, thank you for tackling a closed question. AFAIK Opera is a good choice for my (doomed) notebook, however the surfing was only intended as practical example of a running linux setup. Learning the 101 of Linux is my main aim. I will try Tom's disk, even if got the impression its purpose is to be a rescue disk.

Personlly, I doubt you will find any joy browsing the web using 5MB RAM. However, there are a few OS out there which allow you to make use of old but dear hardware. I used geos2 (http://www.geocities.com/originalravinray/geos/faq/pcgeosfaq.html) some time ago successfully, and there is now a geos3. I am not sure if there is an web browser. But there are wysiwyg text editors and other different communication tools.

There are others out there, slashdot has had a features ever so often.
