I am a member of a different computer book club.  The book prices and shipping are reasonable.  The problem is that the books themselves are not very good.  I look up the book reviews on amazon.com before I buy and find that the great majority of these books have fair to poor reviews.  I was happy with the bonus books but it was difficult to
find books that had decent reviews to meet my 1-year obligation to buy. The best feature of the club is that I have to explicitly order a book before they send it to me. I would never, never, never join a club that sends books automatically.

I suspect that these book clubs provide a way for publishers to get rid of books that are not selling well.

what I looked at was an intro offer.  they give you the entire MSCE exam cram series and a cd.  Thats seven books for 9.99 + shipping.  You have to buy 3 or 4 more books at reqular price in the next 2 years.  What I wonder about is shipping going to be 40 bucks? or a more resonable 10?  They do send books automatically if you don't tell them not to each month.  What book club are you in?

What type of programming are you looking for?  The LCIS is aimed at general programmuing and mainframes more than the PC world.  They have a small computer club that is aimed more at the PC world.  Shipping charges are not too bad unless the book is big.  As I recall most are in the $5-10 range (per book).

They do have an online site where you can decline and order books.

I have found that they don't really offer that many books that I want so finding 3-4 in a year is difficult.

good luck

This is is going to seem strange but I don't know the name of the club!  I don't have one of their offers handy. Since I've met the obligation I don't spend much time reviewing their offers.  I was forced to make my selection (after a year) or they were going to charge me the average book price without sending me a book.

I would advise against joining the club.  Decide what you want to learn first and then find a good book on that topic and buy it.  I highly recommend amazon.com (but not their "marketplace" which are actually other companies selling thru their website). Don't be attracted to a tricky offer for a book that you don't really need.

thanks every one

mlmcc: That is what I wanted to know! 5-10 bucks is way to much.  it should only cost about 4.50 for the first one and 2-3 for each other in the same order
