Uninstallation causes Windows Installer error

I have several apps installed on a Win2K machine, some made by our company, some not.  None of our applications use the windows installer, theirs does.

When one of our applications is uninstalled, however, we start seeing a "Windows Installer: Preparing to install..." dialog box in various places.  This happens when we try to run the other company's products, when we try to install the other company's products, and when we try to uninstall our other product.

This doesn't happen on all Win2K machines, only a handful.  Any clues as to what could be happening?

You could try the windows installer cleanup utility:

Well, I tried it, but unfortunately I couldn't even install it.

I was playing around on my test machine, and found that if I installed Win2K SP2 and then reinstalled one of the other company's apps everything worked fine and dandy.  On the client's machine, though, I'm not having the same luck.  Anything that uses the windows installer is being rejected, saying that there's already an install in progress and it must complete first, even though there actually isn't.

So I can't even install the cleanup utility.  :/

So this involves some w2k machines with SP2 on client side?
Is this with roaming profiles?
And for clarification purposes:  The only error received client-side is "Windows Installer: Preparing
to install..." dialog box -- and this occurs with both the other company products (BTW which products?) and your installer (which installer is used for your products?)

I am not totally sure what is at the client side.  I'm guessing SP1 as when I installed it on the laptop they sent to us it didn't say it was already installed.  The test machine I have was setup to be a clean install of Win2k and I reproduced the error.  I installed SP2, reinstalled that one app and everything was fine.  It didn't work as well on the laptop they sent us.

I'm not sure about roaming profiles.  I don't have much experience with Win2k, so you'll have to be more specific.

The only error that was recieved before was the dialog you mention, though now when I try to install something I actually get into the installer, but then it tells me that there's another installation already running and it must finish first.

The company's products are Datamine and Earthware, and I am using IS Pro 6.0 (they are using ISWI, I think it is v2.0).

Well, I don't get the symptom mentioned in that article, and my msi.dll's version is higher than the one it mentioned.

I must make note, however, that when I ran a search on my machine for that file, I got the "Preparing for instal..." message again, twice, before it went away and let me do my search... :/

So - Office 2000 muct be involved in this equation?  Server share or local CD HDD installation?

Well, Office 2000 is installed on the clients machine and not my test machine, but I fail to see how that has to be part of the problem.  I'm not sure what kind of install it was (he just took his laptop back) but I'd hazard a guess that it is a local install.

I'm going to try to reproduce what's going on again, though with the inclusion of Office 2000.
