Start by ending task on all but Explorer and Systray. Push one time <Ctrl-Alt-Delete>. The "Close Program" dialog box should appear. Highlight each item expect the above mentioned ones, and end task on each. These steps will have to be repeated until only Explorer and Systray remain. Then try your installation from the downloaded file.

If that does not work, you may need to uninstall whatever version of RealPlayer you currently have, before trying the install.

Thanks,

this would have worked with win98 but not with win 2000 as ctrl alt del brings up a different box. In the box I can access task manager but this does not list up running programmes as was the case with win 98.

This is Real's troubleshooting page for RP8 Basic. Along with the steps I suggested, it has a few others. I don't have a running copy of Win2000, but I know that Task Manager was a bit different than with 98. By clicking on the TM tab, you should bring up a list of running programs.

Task manager shows only the open internet explorer pages I am using, it does not for instance list up direct CD which I know is rinning in the background, explorer and systray are also not listed. I will follow up on the links you have provided but will be three to four days before I can do this as I am now of on a businesss trip.

Thanks

Your answer was correct in principle that there must have been background programmes running. However, the only programme running was I E 5.5 which I was using to download and install realplayer and could not close. I have obtained realplayer on a free CD and installed ok from CD
