Adobe Premier 5.1 / Reading AVI files

Greetings!

I have quite a few AVI files here.  Some are encoded with DivX, others some MPEG flavor.  My problem is this:
- I can play the movies just fine in windows media player.  All the necessary codecs must be installed.
- When I go into Premier, I am unable to load ANY of these movies.  Every time I try, I get the message "Unsupported compression format".

Here is what I do:
- I start premier.
- It prompts me to create a new project.  I just hit OK.
- I hit File->Open, navigate to the appropriate folder, double click the movie (they are all .AVI).  After a brief delay, I get: "Unable to open that file.  Files uses an unsupported compression format."

How can I load these files into Premier?  What do I have to do to get Premier to recognize the formats?  Keep in mind, I can play ALL these movies in Windows media player, and yet Premier can open NONE of them.

Thanks!

Premier is telling you whats wrong. The compression formats used on those movies are NOT supported by premier. Its like trying to play a DVD in a CD player. It just plain doesnt support it. WMP can open the files because thats what its designed to do. Its an end of line tool used to VIEW the files. Premier is not a player, its an editor and is not designed to play encoded files. ESPECIALLY ones encoded with DIVX which is non-standard, not finalized, and still very much a crude hack of MPEG-4.

Ah, could you suggest any way to modify the movies so that they are readable by premier?  Would it be possible to decompress them somehow?  If not, I'll just accept your comment as an answer.  Thanks!

You would have to decompress them and export them to a format like .mov. If by chance youre using Quicktime under OS X you could use http://www.versiontracker.com/moreinfo.fcgi?id=11952&db=mac and export the files as .mov files. If youre in windows and not using Quicktime i just dont know. WMP isnt exactly known for its extensive export features.
Just buy Quicktime Pro. Whatever system you use you will be able to export the files as uncompressed avi or mov ~(well you canm on the pc anyway), and QT Pro costs next to nothing.

QTPro cant open DIVX files unless youre using the codecs i posted above. And as far as i know that codec is purely for the OS X version of QTPro. They havent included codecs for other platforms because DIVX is such a shoddy format at this point. Once its standardized and properly released as MPEG-4 it will be included.
Try VirtualDub. Should be able to open all your avi files and export them to an uncompressed format for use in Premier....

Thank you very much.  VirtualDub works nicely.  For those interested, it can be found here:
