Whats the difference between varchar and nvarchar in short?

What datatype do I use if I want to store "foreign" text from different languages (Japanese, Portugese, etc) in my English SQL Server 2000?

nvarchar

varchar only holds ascii characters which will not cope with extended character sets.

N is for UniCode. Stores each characters on 2 bytes so it is accepting any "foreign" characters.
