You can use the BDE to connect to databases through the ODBC, and although this provides a free and easy-to-use choice, there are alternatives on the market which are much more suitable.

We use ODBCExpress from Datasoft (www.odbcexpress.com) which we are very happy with as other users appear to be from the support on their newsgroups. This solution means that you don't have to install the BDE on client machines which is a horrible overhead of the BDE, plus it is a much better implementation of ODBC access than the BDE provides.

There are newer database middleware technologies available such as ADO and dbExpress but these are for Delphi 5 upwards. The ODBC has been around for years and is extremely well supported, especially by the major players such as Microsoft, Sybase, FoxPro and Oracle. It is a good standard to use if you are using Delphi 3 - there are better alternatives available as I have mentioned but over the past couple of years, the ODBC has emerged as a stable and well-supported choice.
