Asus vs. Intel Motherboards?

Hi all,
This is my first attempt at putting together a system so please excuse my ignorance. I have been thinking of using an Asus P4T motherboard and an INTEL? PENTIUM? IV PGA478 CPU at 1.5 G. These will cost me approx. $350 US

Today I stopped by my computer store to pick up my new case and saw a bundle consisting of an Intel P4 PGA423 D850GBC mobo with an Intel P4 PGA423 1.5 ghz for $270.00.

In your opinion, which is the best combination to get? I don't want to cheap out for the sake of cheaping out, but I do want to get as much bang for my buck as possible.

Any expert opinions would be appreciated.
Thx in advance

Gary

PS Some folks are also telling me to get a
1.4ghz Athlon and DDR motherboard (cheaper and faster than a P4 at 1.5ghz.)

I prefer the AMD/DDR combinations to the P4/RDRAM designs.  RDRAM is overpriced and it significantly underperforms the DDR motherboards.
RDRAM is evil....it has a higher memory bandwidth compared to DDR RAM, but the people behind the technology are bastards.

Any reason particular why you want a P4?  Athlon platforms perform equal to, if not better, and are also cheaper.
