It can be done using filters but this is an IE only thing.  Details can be found at http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/workshop/author/filter/reference/reference.asp

You may want to look at either Shadow or DropShadow depending on what you want.
<DIV STYLE="height:1px; filter:progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.dropshadow(OffX=5, OffY=5, Color='gray', Positive='true')">This black text has a grey drop shadow.</DIV>
<DIV STYLE="filter:progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.Shadow(color=#0000FF,direction=-45);height: 1px; color: #FF0000;">This red text is displayed with a 45-degree blue shadow.</DIV>

The object that the filter is applied to must have layout before the filter effect displays. You can give the object layout by setting the height or width property, setting the position property to absolute, setting the writingMode property to tb-rl, or setting the contentEditable property to true.

Absolutely position things and then another one offset a little.  Real painful to code.  I can write a small demo if you wish.

As an alternative, if you are prepared to accept coding just for IE then consider that IE5.5 is by far the most used browser, and growing.  IE users do tend to have no issues with upgrading so less than ver 5.5 won't be around for long anyway.
