Microphone voice recording and songs

I've tried and given up for years on making my microphone recordings sound natural with songs.  Finally I remembered there's Experts Exchange ;)

So here's the deal, whenever I make a recording and mix the voice in with the music, it sounds like the music is in the background and the voice just totally overpowers it.  Other songs like MP3's you download off the net have the voice "in" with the music.

I'm quite experienced in Sound Forge (I have Sound Forge 5.0 full; so if you could give me tips on that) and I tried changing many settings from graphic equalization of the voice to normalization. Nothing seems to work. You can tell that it's soo.... "amateurish" hehe :D
I know that adding a bit of echo or using the Creative EAX voice modification things help a BIT but you can still tell it's not professional <:(

I don't think this is the right section to post, try the multimedia or graphics sections.

You could try

1) recording your voice separately and then blending that with your music into one file.

2) playing your music in the background and recording your voice along with music in the background into the mic.
