Hi,

I got a windows2000 server running at home.

sp1 - i know i'll try sp2 shortly.

on boot is about 50% of the time gets to 'preparing network connections....' then locks.   the rest of the time is gets to the logon box then everthing is fine.  once logged on never any problems.

where can i see a bootlog of what the machine was trying to do just before it crashed so i can troubleshoot?

thanks

Bendecko

I would make sure you get sp2, and also update your NIC drivers to the latest.

The event log is normally used to trace problems, but your lockup may be before it even starts.

I would check all 3 logs anyway.

In addition Cleanup the startup stuff. For  NT or win2k,
Download the Startup COP a free pcmag utility from
http://www.zdnet.com/downloads/stories/info/0,,77594,.html
Run it and it will show you everything that is listed in all the possible startup
places, and allow you to disable things one at a time until the problem is eliminated.
A lot of probelms are caused by excess old baggage - programs that have not been properly  un-installed. Startup Cop will eliminate leftovers and un-wanted programs that you no longer want.
Older Antivirus programs and Norton Utilities have been known to cause problems
try disabling them also !

I hope this helps !

Also try the following switch in your boot.ini file

/SOS

The /sos switch causes the loader to print the name of loaded modules. When Windows NT
comes up instead of displaying dots while the devices load, Windows NT will show the actual
names of the drivers as they load.

For more information, please see the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

Q99743 Purpose of the Boot.ini File

I hope this helps !

Ok thanks.  Good stuff

/sos is good for text-mode driver loadup

systemlogs are good for later (as you say sysexpert)

i do need some sort of logging in between these phases.

on closer inspection i have noticed it locks up *just before* it should say 'preparing network connections'.

sp2 applied, nic drivers current.
