Multiple CD drives appearing
I have a win98 PC which is showing 4 identical CD drives D: E: F: G: (it only has one).
They show in windows explorer and also the device manager and all attempts to remove them has failed. Please could anyone help.

Try starting in Safe Mode. Remove all four instances (or however many appear) of the drive in Device Manager. Restart. It should clean the problem up, unless you actually do have 4 CDROMs. :-)
Go to Start - Run & type sysedit
Look in the autoexec.bat file for lines that include the mscdex.exe command and rem them out (type the word rem followed by a space at the beginning of each line with mscdex in it).

do you have virtual cd installed on this machine? that will show more cd drives than installed

I have removed the drives in safe mode, but on re-booting, they come back. There are also no lines involving mscdex in the autoexec file, and I do not have virtual CD on this PC. It is a tricky one!

also if you put a CD in the only physical drive you have, under which drive letter does it show ?

I will post the files shortly. If I put a CD in, it appears on all the drives, and any of them can be used. It does not work very well but is useable.

What drives (internal or external) do you have attached?
Please give as much info as you can. Anything changed (hardware/software) since CDrom detected correctly?
Is your bios set to auto or maually set to CDrom on some of the channels ?
Running out of ideas unless you give me a new lead.

and win files. I should say that the PC came to me secondhand and there appear to be a lot of references to software that no longer exists, so maybe the final answer will be a reload of Windows

Oh and yes!
C: is pri master, I am not sure about the CD, I don't think you can tell without removing the cover? as it does not show in the bios. The bios is set to auto for the CDROM, there is also a tape drive which I have not investigated.

Thanks for all your suggestions, but none of them helped. Eventually I took the easy way out and re-loaded windows, and everything is now fine.

sorry I didn't get back sooner. the only line I could see that may have been related was

It was the only thing remotely related to a CD drive but I doubt if that was the problem
