CDROM problems

I have been having terrible problems with my CD Roms in my System.  When I have any CD in, the whole system starts freezing up as if it has to wait for the CD ROM to see what is on the CD.  When I have no CD's in any of my 3 CD ROMS there is no problem.  Now for the matters to get worse, I think somehow this issue is destroying my CDR Drive.  IF you guys have any Ideas plz help me.  I am a tech myself and built my system but I have no clue how to fix this issue.  I can't even turn off the auto insert notification in WIN 2000!!!
I will give a thousand points to whoever can completely resolve this problem.

I have an ASUS CUBX-L MOB with a built in Promise ultra 100 IDE controller built in.  8 IDE devices.
UDMA1 M IBM 12GB
UDMA1 S Seagate 6GB

UDMA2 M ASUS DVD ROM
UDMA2 S LG CDR used to be Yamaha CDR wich no longer functions on any IDE configuration.

IDE1 M MAXTOR 40GB
IDE1 S empty

IDE2 M Cheap CD ROM
IDE2 S Zip Drive

Ask any questions....

First question, what are your system specs?  Is it all the cd-rom devices including the dvd or is it just one of them.  Try putting the dvd and cd-r on the ide and move the hard drive to the controller card.  Your cd-rom, cd-r and dvd will make the devices on the same ide drop to 33 as oppose to the 100.  Although with Win 2k you can't take true advantage of the 100.  Have you tried more RAM?  How is it destoying your cd-r.  Have you tried removing some of the devices?  I notice you have a lot of devices, what is your power supply?  I think you should be using 300W power supply?  Do you have access to a 300W that you can put in there?  When you say you can't turn off the auto insert notification, do you mean that when you press on the shift when you insert the cd, the autorun is running?

I have a 300W PS.  I have 785 MB of RAM.  I don't know how to turn disable AUTO-RUN.  I have problems on all my CD ROMs.  IT destroys my CDR I think because when I put it in 1st it was working fine.  Now it won't even read some CDs.
IT is a weird problem.  IF you want to know more about my system go here...http://fpw.isoc.net/moreno/computer_tech_stuff.htm

If all CD-ROMS are playing up, I would start by checking , as mentioned above, the output of your power supply. It may be failing under load. I also would recommend to put the CDR as a master drive on and IDE bus as some CDRs' do not like to be a slave (who does). I would also suggest to disconnect one device at a time to acertain who the culprit is.

Good luck

I noticed your pc is overclocked.  Try to run it at the normal 800 and see if you have any problems.  When you overclock, it can cause many problems in your PC.  See if that helps you.  Do you have enough fans to cool your PC.  Because you are overclocking, you may want to get the golden orb.  It works pretty well.  I know that overclocking does not work well on promise cards.  You can also try a lower clock rate as well.
