Had the same problem on my box. First i started my system with my w2k CD then choosed to repair my system with option check/repair system files. After that i was able to log on again.

Tried everything but it didnt work...<br />
Never encountered such thing before.Couldnt do a thing.<br />
Used computer in the morning...cama back in the evening...<br />
everything went to hell...And antivirus software is ON.<br />
No viruses what so ever...strange indeed.Instead of repair I formated everything and did a clean install.<br />
