The most recent version of Linux is 2.4.12 IIRC, you are probably talking about your distro's version 7.

Assuming its an RPM based distro then you need to install all the packages that it depends on to.

For example (and I'm plucking version numbers out of the air):

rpm -Uvh telnetd-0.17-19.i386.rpm

tells you that you need inetd... so you find the inetd rpm and install that as well:

rpm -Uvh telnetd-0.17-19.i386.rpm inetd-0.17-5.i386.rpm

Keep adding requested packages to the command line until it installs.

after you install whole the rpms you need to go to

vi /etc/xinetd.d/telnet
by vi editor or other text editors

and change the disable=yes   --> disable= no

after that step you need to restart

xinetd

the command:

/etc/rc.d/init.d/xinetd restart

and here you go

check the telnet

command:

telnet localhost
