Unable to demote the last DC in 2000 domain
I have just removed all PCs from a W2k domain and I now want ot demote the only DC to a stand alone
When I run dcpromo it comes up with an error message "Unable to find or contact the specified domain or Forest". I can't get any further than that. I have plugged it ainto a hub and even attached one of the old PCs to the domain again but get nowhere. I want to demaote it to stand alone so that it can become a DC in another domain.
Will reinstall the OS if there are no other suggestions.
Any Ideas?

Once an MS server has been configured as a domain controller, there is no going back. MS forces you to reinstall in order to join or create a new domain.

That was true with NT4 but with 2000 you can use DCpromo to promote or demote a server from member or standalone server to a domain controller and back again.

That's what I did in the end and it worked. For your ref I did have a theory that the server's DNS setting was pointing to another DNS server and thus it couldn't find its own domain. I didn't check this before I rebuilt so can't tell you if this was true but if anyone has the same problem it is worth checking.
