I bought a notebook with Windows 2000 installed. Now I want to install a Windows ME on it. Sure I know I have to make a partition first. But I am not sure is it possible to do that and which one should I install first.

Although Windows ME is dual-boot aware, you will be more successful installing ME and then 2000. On some systems, particularly laptops and notebooks, a hang may occur at the point the ME install requests the Windows 2000 CD to install the boot loader files.

Thanks for the info. But:
1.
Do you mean I should take down the Windows 2000 first and install Windows ME and then Windows 2000?
2.
Is it possible that without taking down the Windows2000 and install the Windows ME?

It's possible to add Windows ME to a system with Windows 2000. First you have to use a utility like Partition Magic to create another primary partition and set it as bootable and active. Install WinMe on the new partition and boot from it. Download a free utility called bootpart from http://www.winimage.com/bootpart.htm and follow the instructions for the utility. More information is available from http://www.winimage.com/bootpart.htm.

Forget to mention works for both Windows NT and Windows 2000.

You don't need to do anything of the kind.

1. Create the four install disks from the CD, you may need these to do a repair on the Win2k installation.

2. Now go ahead and partition the drive and place 2000 on the second partition. It must be a physical partition not an extended partition, although an extended partition will work for a while until a problem occurs.

3. Install ME on "C". Keep in mind that #2 and #3 will render the Win2k unusuable at this point.

4. Now use the 4 install disks and repair the Win2k install!
