Illustrators Pathfinder Divide not working for Photoshop images

I have both photoshop and illustrator open.  I create an image in photoshop and select the object and copy.  i then open up illustrator and paste it into my project.  i use that image along with a square that i've created in illustrator.  i select both and click the divide option in the pathfinder pallette.  it does not divide the photoshop image.  am i supposed to do something to this image so that it will cut with the divide command?

Photoshop images are RASTER images, not vector. The divide tool only works with vector art and the same goes for the rest of the tools in that palette. If you want to crop a raster image you either do it in Photoshop or use the Mask features of Illustrator.

I know that they are incompatible, could you give me a brief example of using the mask feature?  Does it work the same?  do i click on two items, one vector and one raster and click mask?
You make your mask shape over the raster image, and select Clipping Mask from the Object menu. Thats all there is.
