Installing OS X

I'm running 9.2.1 already using applications such as Pagemaker, Codewarrior 5, Appleworks, Visualworks.

I've just ordered 10.1 from Apple. Will installation require formatting the hard drive (with consequent installation of other apps?)

Will I be able to use my current apps directly in OS X? (I know that classic 9.2 is emulated, but will that imply booting in either one system of the other?)

On a personal note, is it actually worth it? Are the apps that come with OS X (such as the mail, browser, etc) worth the change?

I have an iMac DV 400Mhz with 320Mb RAM.

I wanted to add: I've just bought Myst:Exile

Will this run under 10.1?

No you dont have to reformat the HD. You will be able to use your current apps via Classic Mode in OSX which means it launches os 9.2.1 IN OSX and then runs your apps. Appleworks 6.x runs natively in OSX and more apps are being ported every day. You can also dual boot so you can boot to either 9.2.1 or OSX depending on your needs. And yes, MYST III runs natively in OSX.

Do you recommend a clean install (I've always been in favour, personally)?

I ask because my 9.2.1 has come from 9.0.4 original, updated to 9.1 then updated to 9.2.1. Presumably 9.2.1 comes with the CDs?

Its always nice to have a clean system and it probably wouldnt hurt your classic environment performance but its up to you. Im not sure OSX comes with 9.2.1 yet or not. In any case its an easy update.

There are 3 CDs which, I think, have the following:

- OS X
- Development tools
- Classic OS

The more I mull it over, the more I think I'll do a clean install. I'm just slightly anxious because my current system is working so well and I'm usually of the belief that "if it ain't broke, don't fix"

I've done it. I was sort of pushed - my original OS suddenly wouldn't boot!!

It's a weird system is X. I feel like a bloody newbie after more than 10 years using Mac OS.

A quick question - is it possible to change the size of the menu font? IMO it's too damned big.

Re. Appleworks 6. I tried installing from the original 9.0.4 CD under X and it started up Classic! I mention it, Weed, because you said Appleworks runs natively in X.

Yes, its a bit different and takes some getting used to. To change system fonts etc check your preferences. To get AppleWorks to run natively you need to update it to the carbon version which is available from www.versiontracker.com ... Once carbonized it runs fine.

Thanks, Weed. Still trying to get used to it.... Have tried installing the Scanwise software for my 1212u. Can't get it to recognise the bloody scanner (that's connected to the keyboard). I'll keep trying, though, and will make it another topic if I can't manage.
I lost my hard drive on a G3 imac running 9.2. I installed new drive and 10.3. There is no System 9 or Classic available for me and that is fine. Except that I used Appleworks. I have an original install CD for Appleworks but it is System 9. I tried using the 10.3 installer utility without success. I don't want to rebuy Appleworks and I don't really want System 9 on it either. My experience has been that once i open classic, 10.3 starts to crawl. Any ideas. I have other Macs around with both 10.3 and Classic and still boot them in 9.2.1 for my music (ProTools with the board and Digi001). Any ideas. Appleworks is only $79 but I am so cheap.
