Hiya,

If i understand you right you want a file to be saved when an image is clicked (or text) ..

This Cannot be done if it could people would put links to virus`s and other such nasties ..

I have done it once but it involved creating a copy of the orig page and saving the copy so it wasnt a one click save link really

dont think this answer will help but hope it is usefull

Stelogic2,

Welcome to Experts-Exchange.

Please read the guidlines for comments and answers.

A comment the ends with "dont think this answer will help but hope it is usefull"

Is hardly an "answer".  You have now remove the question from the active list and reduce the chances that other experts may comment and help the questioner.  I will ask a moderator to review the question.

You cannot do what you want to do with HTML.  You may be able to build an activex control or windows shell script to bypass security.  If you are doing this on an intranet it is feasible, but illogical as there are easier ways to transfer files on a closed network.

If this is for a page on the Internet, then anyone that permits you to breach security that way is an idiot, who will be post questions on how to fix their system after it got trashed by some site that exploited the security hoe that you created on their computer.

BTW if it is for an intranet, you will still be creating a big security hole for any users whole also connect ot the Internet.

Advice for Experts on Providing Solutions Through Comments or Answers

Experts may post solutions to your question in the form of a comment or answer, so be sure to check every email notification as soon as it arrives. Often, an Expert posts the solution to your problem as a comment because it is early in the collaboration process and other issues may be involved. In addition, it is common etiquette in some topics areas to always post comments and not answers. There are several reasons behind this thinking:

Questions do not become prematurely locked and the collaboration process is not inhibited when the question is indexed as open for proposed solutions. The question-asker has the power to select the best solution rather than one that is simply suggested as an answer.
Watch out for unclear or multiple-part questions. You can send a comment to the member requesting that they rephrase or break up the question before you submit an answer.

If you don't know the answer, leave the question for someone else.

If you are unsure of your solution, post it as a comment rather than an answer. Members can accept comments as solutions and award points for them.

You are only responsible for providing one reasonable answer.

You may review information about a member, including their grading history, by clicking on their member name.

I thought this was a HELP forum ?

What ajosephson wants to do can be done in html but not exactly as he wants hence the "This Cannot be done if it could people would put links to virus`s and other such nasties .." therfore my answer was NO which is the CORRECT answer but instead of just saying that as it is a HELP forum i was saying that i have found a way of doing it in ONLY HTML but it is not how he wants to do it hence the "I have done it once but it involved creating a copy of the orig page and saving the copy so it wasnt a one click save link really" which is why i added the "dont think this answer will help but hope it is usefull"

now to please you all i will rewrite the phrase so you can all understand it ok !

The comment i have provided is not intended to resolve your issue 100% as i believe what you are trying to do is impossible in HTML rather than just sayin it cannot be done i have intended to show you another possibility (ie HELP you ).

I love it when someone on the site for two days takes the time to explain to us how our TAs should operate.  We really appreciate the guidance on we should conduct ourselves.

Much more approriate than those that take the time to see how the site operates, and what he TA protocols are, and how the expert respond.

Exactly what I expect from the people I hire to.  Come in and tell us how we should rung the business.

If you are trying to understand how the site works, just take a look at how the experienced experts conduct themselves.  You will find that we almost never use the answer button, and then only after the question has been well explored.

THE ANSWER IS NO IT CANT BE DONE !

hence the "This Cannot be done if it could people would put links to virus`s and other such nasties .."

So should i use the comment button to send answers in ??

AND IM NOT A "experienced experts " as you pointed out !!!

If you spent half the time you have wasted telling me that you know how to use this HELP FORUM better than i do, helping the person that asked the question he would be a very happy man!

now im sick of repeating myself to you..do what your meant to be doing in this HELP forum and HELP people.

Kindest regards

steve

I have tried to help you with this and as i said it can "kind of" be done but it does involve 2 clicks rather than one. but i am not willing to spend anymore time dealing with this over zealous moderator if i can help you more please mail me ..steve@stelogic.com

An interesting approach we only see it in a small percentage of visitors to the site; but not unique.

Come to the site.  Decide what the rules should be.  When  the correct approach is suggested
demonstrate an inability to communicate effectively by shouting and flaming.

As for helping, I have answered 781 questions, and rank 65th among the 75,000 active and 600,000
total members on this site. I got that ranking by submitting comments and collaborating with other
experts, not by forcing an "answer" on the user.

If you don't like the way the forum works perhaps you should look elsewhere for something more
suitable.  Where your disregard for the existing community and your tantrums will be overlooked.

stelogic2, you seem to be missing COBALdinasaur's point.  What he is trying to get you to underatand, is to look at a few questions from those who have been here awile, to see how they operate within the TA's as many are different in prospective and the way ppl go about protocol.

just my two cents.

Besides the comment I mame on 10/11, click on the link at the bottom of this comment box and the link *click here*, and even that is somewhat deceptive.  We have for awhile now to change the portocols in the Various TA's, and have hit a road block.

But that may change soon if all works out okay.

Sorry for butting in CD, but I didn't want this to be the last comment.

Steve,

what you might not be aware of yet (as you are new) is that most experts only post COMMENTS, not answers.  The user DOES have the ability to select a comment as the right answer, and the experts here rely on the users of the site to do the right thing and select the proper comment as the answer.

So regardless of whether you think you know the correct answer or not (and I believe you were right on with this one, that it can't be done) doesn't matter.  You should still post as a comment and let the user select your comment as an answer if they feel it was helpful.

Thanks, and good luck here at EE.

ajosephson,

there might be a way to do what you are requesting but it would involve changing some settings on the web server.  I'm not even fully sure, but I believe if you change the MIME types and the server no longer recognizes the type of file you are linking to, it should offer a save dialog box instead of opening the file.

I have been to sites, perhaps somewhat rogue, which upon entering the page place the SAVE AS dialogue box immediately on the screen...

Like it goes, I can’t locate said site... but I am NOT imaging it..

they might just have a 0 second redirect to a file that is causing the pop up dialog...

Is that not a solution?

Commented:
chances are that won't work for an acrobat file....cause it will just open in your browser.

The question has been here for over two months.  No solution has been put forth, and the question is no longer going to get any attention because it is near the bottom of the active list.

If you want to continue your quest for something that is not possible, then delte this and re-post the question.

Based on a lot of experience, I would say your chances of finding a way t do what you want to do are about zero;  but who knows if you re-post it, maybe someone will come along with a hack none of us has seen before.

stelogic2,

I've gone against COBOLdinosaur's recommendation and accepted your comment as an answer. However, in doing so, I've also given a grade far lower than is customary.

Your behavior in this post is hardly professional, courteous, or within the guidelines of a site dedicated to collaboration. In the future, please post your suggestions in the form of a Comment, as listed at the bottom of the page. Wow - I've never seen an exchange like this on EE!  I'm quite shocked!!  Its rare enough to see someone post an answer, let alone get stroppy about it when they're asked not to. Worth the 5 PAQ points for a bit of drama - Nice to see the good guys won and still managed to be (reasonably) polite! Ah, I love EE, Best wishes to all, even the bad guy, P :)
Pandora,

I've seen a couple like this... but none that involved so many long-time Experts and two active Moderators. But I've gotta admit -- it was definitely satisfying to find a use for the D grade... <grin>

But now I'm thinking there might be a new feature EE can offer that could help pay the bills... <laughing>
