Win2K fails to boot after failed IE6 install

Twice I've tried to install IE6 w/ the same results on a system that otherwise has had no problems since Win2K was installed 18 months ago.

Each time the install proceeds ok until it completes and reboots.  I get the logon prompt (UID w/ admin priv), enter the PWD and I get the "Windows Update" popup.  As soon as the desktop is ready to come up the system reboots.  Having had this same problem last time, I booted to safe mode, went to "remove programs" and chose to uninstall IE6 and restore IE5.5.  Completed normally last time but this time all I get on reboot is a "Desktop" popup saying IE6 was removed and do I want to clean up personal settings.  "Yes" or "No" doesn't matter.  On reboot I still get the same message.  I booted to safe mode again and reinstalled IE5.5, rebooted, logged in and still get the same message.  No matter what I answer, the system reboots.  Then I tried booting to last known good profile.  Same story.

Upshot is that I cannot reboot even after re-installing IE5.5.  Anyone have any suggestions for restoring the system?  Not even to mention that IE6 failed to install twice.

Thanks, Mark

Try the IEradicator from here: http://www.98lite.net/ieradicator.html and see if you can boot.  If so, try reinstalling IE 6.

Well, i tried as much of the above information as i could.  btw, the ieradicator won't work in my case as i have win200sr2 installed but thanks to aleinss for the suggestion.

i've collected a lot of information from logs, dumps, etc.  the eventlog recorded the following multiple times:
------------------------------------------------------
Date: 1/3/2002          Source: Save Dump
Time: 18:12          Category: None
Type: Information     EventID:1001
User: N/A
Computer: ORCA

Description:
The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck.  The bugcheck was: 0x0000001e (0xc0000005, 0x8050955f, 0x00000000, 0x00000000). Microsoft Windows 2000 [v15.2195]. A dump was saved in: C:\WINNT\Minidump\Mini010302-01.dmp.
-------------------------------------------------------

I retrieved the dump file but i'm not able to read it.  Also a number of entries in the Winmgmt.log such as:
-------------------------------------------------------
(Thu Jan 03 17:56:00 2002) : core is being shut down by WinMgmt.exe, it returned 0x0
-------------------------------------------------------

And finally, from wuhistv3 the following on initial attempts to install IE6:
-------------------------------------------------------
V3_2|4666|INSTALL|Microsoft Internet Explorer 6|6,0,2600,0|2002-01-03 17:53:21|1|FAIL|0x80070002|The system cannot find the file specified.|
V3_2|4666|INSTALL|Microsoft Internet Explorer 6|6,0,2600,0|2002-01-03 17:53:49|1|FAIL|0x80070002|The system cannot find the file specified.|
-------------------------------------------------------

This is not all the information that I've collected but it seems to be the most relevant.  Anyone know how to get the minidump read?  Why would WinMgmt.exe just shut down the core and cause a reboot? I guess I'll try re-installing windows when I get my disk back from my other residence.

had to re-install windows...wish i could have had a bit more input as to how to really analyze the problem.  i don't really learn much when the solution is to just reinstall.  but my thanks to crazyone for basically pointing out all the options.  i had a lot of diagnostic data and no where to go with it.

thanks again crazyone!
