I want to use the VGA out port on my notebook to send video to a projector while the LCD on my notebook has a different image. I am using Windows XP on a brand new Dell Inspiron 4100.

Nope, it can't be done

Sorry that isn't the answer you were looking for but it is true.
On normal terms no it can't be done. But there should be certain software that will allow that. Saddly i don't know them, sorry.

When win98 (as an example) handles two monitors, it uses two graphic adapters. If your machine has only got one (as I'd suspect is true of most laptops), you have the answer from rayt333 I think.

digital-sniper: It's a hardware limitation, not a software limitation. The notebook has only one graphics chip and can therefore only produce one display regardless of where it's sending the resulting display.

Here's an acceptable answer to the effect desired:
My Toshiba Laptop has the same options it seems as your Dell Laptop. It is true that this can't be done - totally. But I was using mine through a projector too and the only way I was able to restrict what the audience could see and what I saw on my LCD was to minimize the Screen resolution on the Projector to 640X480 and increase the resolution on the laptop to something like 1024x768. I would them place things I don't want them to see outside the 640x480 area and put things for everyone to view within the 640x480 area (UpperRight corner).

Zigman,
While I think the Q has been sufficiently covered in the supplied comment, and your comment is a valid one, I do want to point out the tips on "Comments and Answers" found on this page. Most contributors here follow the guidelines mentioned there, because: 1) A proposed answer locks the Q and puts it out of view, sort of, and 2) The author can accept any comment as an answer to the Q.
Just some friendly nagging...

Humm, I wonder how you can set the display to two different resolutions with only one video card, and therefore only one display properties??

he was talking about setting your projector to accept a lower resolution than what the computer is sending. i don't think all brands of projectors do that but i'll look into it.

i just got off the phone with dell and they said i can go into my display settings and and switch off clone and it will say something like "extend my desktop". i haven't tried this yet but i'll keep you posted if it works.

it never worked. i think it's possible with software but i'll figure it out someday. it's no big deal really.
