Can Applets read files on user's machine?

krolfes asked
Can an applet read from the user's machine without having to do anything special with them?  I need to allow the users to be able to specify a file on their machine, and then store the data in a datase.

The answer is no.  In order to allow this, you have to sign your applet.

How complicated is it to sign applets and on a Unix environment?
No you cannot do this. You can set up a policy file, but that does not usually work with browsers. Browsers (some) can be configured to allow access to disk, but not many. You can sign your applet, but that's a drag.

Do not use an applet. Give them an application, it is much easier.
This proposed answer is just repeating what was already said...
