User password expiry problem

I created a user account for a Win2000 system (Control Panel -> Users and Passwords). One day, I realised that the password has expired because I was not to connect to this system from another PC. To fix this problem, I went into Control Panel -> Users and Passwords, select the user account, and changed the password. However, there doesn't seem to be any field to indicate the password expiry date, so how come the original password got expired?

Look in the right hand pane at "Maximum Password Age" and double click on it. Note that if you are on a domain the domain polciy supersedes local password policies.
