HP 4550N LASER PRINTING BLANK PAGES AFTER WARMUP

I have a HP 4550N laser jet printer connected to a Windows NT 4.0 server via hubs and cat5. I have windows 98 machines that print to said printer. OK this is what happens. When the printer is on stand by, you submit a print job, it warms up and then prints blank pages until you pull out drawer number 2 to stop it. Then you close this drawer and your submitted print job will print after warmup. This seams to do this first print in the morning, but has done it during the day after printer goes on stand by. This is killing me....help.

Try the following URL:

Download the October 2001 .pdf file. It has an article on Phantom pages that may apply here. Let me know if this helps.

I have seen some problems like this before. It general happens when the jetdict card receives the print job and try to tell the print to print it before it's ready.

I have a couple of things you could do.
1. An immediate work around would be to disable the powersave mode complete. You can do this throught the menu on the printer.

2. Check your spooling options on your workstation. Set to spool the whole job before submitting it not to print directly to printer.

3. You could try to increase the I/O timeout on the printer. This will tel the card to wait longer before thinking the job is complete.
Hi pcwexpert,

The problem here is caused by the age of your transfer belt. That is the consumable you can find in the middle drawer, if you open and close the drawer, it gets a little push and works ok. You will see that your problem is gone after replacing a transfer kit.
What is fysically happening here, the transfer belt is a rubber belt,  because of its age it has become slightly larger, making it slip in the morning (cold, coming from standby, etc.etc.) You will shortly notice a degrading print quality too, when the transfer belt geets even older.
Succes,

you're getting blank pages because of your ITB. (intermediate transfer belt) this is a standard HP consumable part that goes in the upper middle drawer of your machine. this belt assembly is the piece that takes the magnetically charged toner and applies it onto the page.

over time, the ITB will wear down and become nearly unusable. it has a gear timing assembly on the side which will trip a maintenance replacement message on the printer's control panel display. the ITB should be replaced as soon as possible. it will continue to become slackened and dried out, with the possibility of losing it's magnetic properties and cracking with excessive use.

the actual part number for this unit is RG5-5173-130CN, and can be ordered directly off of HP's website. (http://partsurfer.hp.com) i believe it runs for about $430 for this particular model. unless your machine is still under warranty, HP will consider this a consumable rather than a defective component.

if you need to continue to print pages in the meantime, try opening the back cover of the machine and closing it again. this can help you squeeze the last 5% of the mileage out of that belt, but it needs replacement. you can change it out as easily as a toner cartridge.

hope that helps.
