Epson Stylus Color 640: installing to Aptiva E3A using original disk; processes installation okay EXCEPT at one point I get this message:

- headed "Enum\BIOS\*PNP0401\OC"
- error message: "SURegCreateKey failed"
- OK button

I click OK and installation proceeds... completed... reboot computer...

But when trying to use printer for first time I get error message saying "error writing to LTP1...problem printing to the port... check to configure printer to valid port..."

It's all plugged in correctly etc.

(Norton System Works pops up at one stage and asks me if I want it to monitor the installation & I click "No" because it just looks like a complication!)

Hope you can help...

Have you tried downloading the latest driver from www.epson.com
You should close out everything before installing the driver.  Do a CTRL-ALT-DEL and End Task on everything except Explorer and Systray.  Then install the driver.

Because when I got your answer I'd already tried downloading the driver from epson.com and it hadn't worked, so I didn't try downloading it again.  I messed around uninstalling & retrying, from both disk and downloaded driver, but no go.

Then I tried installing the printer via a scanner which I used to use, i.e. installed the scanner to the port, then connecting the printer to the scanner.  This time it worked, on the second try.

So I thought, I didn't really solve it by acting directly on your advice, or even totally on the basis of your advice, but I thought you should have the points since you were in the ballpark.

And I guess it wouldn't've hurt if I'd checked "excellent" as well. I'm such a grouch.
