Launching of damn attachments!!

Hi,

I've got a machine running Windows 2000 (up to SP2) and Office 2000.

When I receive an e-mail with a Word or Excel document attached I can't launch the attachment by double-clicking on it.  If I do then get various different errors - sometime it immediately displays an error without even trying to load the appropriate application (i.e. Word) and other times it loads Word before giving an error message.

I managed to get round the problem by changing the File Association so that it didn't use DDE - and this works fine for Opening of documents. But - if you want to print a document by right clicking on the attachment and selecting Print then you have to use DDE for it to work.

I really don't understand why i'm having these problems on what is essentially a freshly installed machine.

Any ideas?

Cheers

Pete

Are you running office 2000 SR1?

I think it's SR2 - i'll have to check when i'm back in the office.

SR2 is bad news.  There are quite a few ways around this, though.  Take a look at http://www.slipstick.com/outlook/esecup/getexe.htm

Nothing ever in the clear!

This technical paper will help you implement VMware’s VM encryption as well as implement Veeam encryption which together will achieve the nothing ever in the clear goal. If a bad guy steals VMs, backups or traffic they get nothing.

So you think that SR2 could be causing the problem?  I can see that there are issues with SR2 but the web link you've provided does not specify this particular problem.

I really need to know a way around the problem that i've described.

One of the workarounds for this is Chilton Preview.  It is on the link I provided.

Hi,

I've tried the Chilton Preview and whilst it seems to provide some of the functionality it does not allow you the ability to right-click an attachment (or group of attachments) and select Print.

The reason this problem has come to light is because one of our users is receiving many attachments a day that all need printing.  It is obviously very labor intensive to open all the attachments one at a time and print them - therefore we need to be able to use the context menu to print them.

Anyone else know a way round this problem?

Cheers

Have you tried to ditch sr2 and go back to sr1a?

peterwestAuthor Commented:
Nope - but I might try that.

I'm at the location where the machine is located today so I will be spending a good portion of the day investigating the problem and trying to resolve it.

I'll let you know how I get on and, of course, will award the points accordingly.

Cheers

Apologies for not responding to this question soon.

I have managed to resolve the problem using the WINWORD /R method to re-register the programme.  However, I found that if I logged on as a standard user and did this then the routine would not execute.

If I did it logged on as an Administrator then it fixed the problem but only for that user.

In the end I had to get round it by making the user with the problem a member of Domain Admins, running the routine and then removing their Admin priviledges.  This seems to have resolved the issue.

Thanks for your comments.

Unfortunately none of the comments resolved the problem - the solution was eventually determined through Tech-Net and trial and error.
