os not found

Hi one of my friend was browsing the internet. And all of a sudden everything is gone and they can see only the message like  "operating system is not found" . they couldn't see anything other than that message. Can somebody tell me how to do that. thanks in advance.

try making a dos boot disk and copy these files to the disk:
C:\windows\command\fdisk.com
C:\windows\command\sys.com

then start the computer with the boot disk and run fdisk.  When it asks you about enabling large disk support, say yes.  Next choose option 2 (Set active partition) from the menu.  Now set your primary partition active.  Quit fdisk and restart  without the boot disk and see if it works.

If not, try restarting with the boot disk and type "fdisk /mbr" (without quotes) at the prompt.  Try restarting without the disk again.

If it still won't work, try restarting with the boot disk and type "sys C:" at the prompt.  Take the disk out and try restarting.

Bios may have lost sight of the hard disk. Go into CMOS setup and see if the BIOS is detecting the hard disk drive.
I would run a complete virus check before going very far with this.

Umm what is the operating system? Crash2100 has some good advice but it depends on the OS. It could cause more harm then good until we know what the OS is. Is it Win3.1, Win95, Win98, WinME, NT, Win2000, XP, Linux, OS2, BeOs?

Also the Mother boards battery could be going dead.

willinois,

Welcome to Experts Exchange! We hope you will find all the answers you are looking for and/or help many others.

The comment you made for samsuni however, is not as we would like to see it. This can be considered as demeaning to the asker.

I edited your comment for this reason.

There are many ways to make a computer not see an OS.

Sounds as if you have a hard drive controller failure or the hard drive itself has taken a holiday.
However...
More information is needed.
What operating system?
General details regarding the computer.
Has anything unusual been happening...weird noises...strange smells...smoke...that kind of thing.
Do you have a bootable diskette for the computer?
Do you have the installation CD (diskettes?) for the operating system?

StoneG
Did you leave a non-bootable floppy in?

How in the world can you disable the "C" drive??? I have been around computers for quite awhile now and I have never heard of doing this, or even do I know how to "disable" the "C" drive.

Where is Windows installed???

"Finally we found where the fault"
What was the problem and what was the needed fix?
sounds more like it wasn't being seen by the bios. Thats the only thing I can relate to "Disabling the C drive"

I for one do object, first this user has a poor history of posting low point questions and then simply abandoning them.
So far the explanation is certainly a very poor one at best.

Note: I do not feel I deserve the points, only that the user has habit of asking questions and not providing any feedback, then delete them.
Careful rayt333, that "comment could have been considered as demeaning".

I don't need advice from you, you are a nobody who is trying to cheat the system, all I have done is let others know what kind of a loser you really are. If EE wants to suspend my account for that that that is their right, but that still doesn't change the fact that you are a loser.
Excuse me - I also want to know how the C: drive was disabled?  I've been in IT since the early 90's and have yet to see anyone disable a C:\ drive while browsing the internet.
rayt333.  I am right there with ya!  They can suspend me too if they are backing idiots who can't even communicate well.  Without the experts where will they be?  No where, no ads, no income,... OUT OF BUSINESS!
This message brought to you by Compuware and DirectTV DSL.
BTW - We do not want this question deleted. There are 3 experts in this thread who would like an answer.  Last year I was involved in another thread similiar to this one (Dew Associates was involved) - as experts we tend to back each other when the info given is incorrect or a sham.

P.S.  For any year 2000 questions, special attention is needed to ensure the first correct response is awarded, since they are not in the comment date order, but rather in Member ID order.
Hi all,

This has been sent to Administration for further handling.

If a solution was discovered it should be posted to make this thread a useful question and answer.

Its all about useful information that everyone can use in the future.

There are so many threads that we never find the answer for, atleast when we do have an answer we should know what the answer was.
Hi,

I was emailed by Tuvok on this question.

What do we need to happen to resolve this question? I can ask the questioner to respond in more detail (I will email) , however I cannot force him to post. Failing that, what then? Reduce and PAQ, or split?

It goes without saying that grading history will be dealt with as a separate issue.

I'm listening, help me out.

Ian
I vote for Reduce and PAQ
I vote for delete, there are too many useless question already in the PAQ
rayt333, I second that

ComTech,

What's a flame war?  Is that demeaning?
willinois
You seem like an OK type of person, but please try not to rock the boat so much, in other words try to avoid the trouble I have the habit of getting into. I will look forward to working with you in the future.

Although it is fun sometimes  to argue just to argue, it doesn't matter if I am right or not, I will worry about that later.
;>)
rayt333,

Thanks
>>> in other words try to avoid the trouble I have the habit of getting into

Yeah some of us have to bust Ray in the chops once in a while to settle him down. LOL
CrazyOne and rayt333,

Tell me more of all this trouble you get into.  I find it hard to take seriously, please convince me.  You two still seem to be here, so you have not been booted?!?  Criticizing unclear questions isn't illegal.  Questioning supposed authority is a good idea and keeps people honest and from abusing power, so what's the beef?

Does EE break into your email and send nasty notes to all your friends?
Hi willinois, actually those two are very nice and very good experts, and have helped this Community very much over the years.  Their last few comments were in jest.

btw-If you really do not know what a flame war is when two or more people in a situation get angry at one another, and unkind comments are made, it they continue, it is known as a flame war.

Flaming, means calling one names, or insulting someone.

Regards,
CT
