IAM ON VERIZON DSL UTILIZING A WESTELL WIRESPEED MODEM (MODEL C90-36R516) AND TRYING TO SETUP A TWO USER NETWORD AT HOME USING A SMC "BARRICADE" ROUTER (MODEL SMC7004ABR).  MY OPERATING SYSTEM IS WINDOWS ME.  I (AND A NUMBER OF OTHER PEOPLE WHO ARE PAID TO DO THIS) HAVE FOLLOWED THE SETUP INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE ROUTER TO THE LETTER MANY TIMES OVER AND IT WILL NOT RECOGNIZE THE MODEM.  THAT IS, IT ALWAYS GIVES A "DISCONNECTED" INDICATION.  ALL THE IPS HAVE BEEN SET PROPERLY.  IT WILL NOT PING THE SITE.  IF I TAKE THE SIGNAL STRAIGHT FROM THE MODEM TO MY OR THE OTHER COMPUTER I AM TRYING TO SET UP ON THIS NETWORK, IT WORKS JUST FINE.  IF I TAKE THE ROUTER TO ANOTHER ENVIROMENT, DIFFERENT MODEM, DIFFERENT PROVIDER, DIFFERENT COMPUTERS, IT WORKS FINE.  I AM EVEN ABLE TO COMMUNICATE BETWEEN THE TWO COMPUTERS AS A NETWORK BUT NOT ACCESS THE NET.  THIS ONE HAS STUMPED ALL THE MANUFACTURERE.  THE ROUTER MANUFACTURER EVEN SENT ME A NEW UNIT TO TRY, SAME THING. HELP!!!!!!!

On the LAN - can you ping the router?  Can the router ping anything on the Internet from the router itself?

Just out of curiosity - have you tried swapping the cable between the modem and router?  Possibly try using a cross-over instead of straight through or vice versa?

To scraiq84: can ping the router but cannot ping anything on the Internet from the router itself.  Have swapped cables everyway possible even tried a cross-over cable, no good.

When you plug the modem into the PC's - does it just plug and play - or is there any required configuration?  If DHCP is required, is this turned on for the outside interface of the router or is a static address configured?

Yes, the modem is plug and play.  The only software was the actual verizon dsl disc.  It is a dymamic ip address.

The fact that you have used multiple pieces of hardware seems to point to the fact that there is a configuration problem on the router.  You definitely have set up the router to have DHCP on the outside?  Does this use PPoE?

The only other thing I can think of - the DSL modem uses 10baseT coming out right?  Not 100baseT?  Or is this configurable on the modem?  The router is expecting 10baseT.

The router is set up for DHCP, yes, it uses PPoE, and the modem uses 10baseT.  Like is said, this is a tough one.

This is kind of a toughy.  I keep thinking this - so maybe I should say it even though I keep doubting its the answer.  I know with cable providers, you often have to register the MAC address of the machine you are using with the provider.  Typically, rather than calling the provider, you can just change the MAC on the outside of the interface to spoof the MAC of your machine on the inside.  Have you tried this?

Other than that, I would call the ISP.  They should be able to look at what's going on.  Maybe the router is not logging on correctly - I am assuming you have to use a username and password if its PPoE.

No problem.  Glad you got it working.  The silly thing is that the MAC issue was probably the first thing I thought of, but since I have never heard of it on DSL (only on cable), and the fact that you said you hooked it up to both of the internal machines, I thought there was no way that was it - so I didn't mention it until I had asked everything else!  Oh well, sometimes it works out that way.  Glad you got it!!

While it is possible to put two routes in place with the secondary having a higher metric, this may not always work. In the event of a failure that does not bring down the physical interface on the router the primary route is not removed. There is a…
