Internet Explorer's friendly message replaced

Well, I accepted a certificate that added links to my favorites and desktop. I can fix that. The problem is that this site also replaced the friendly "This page can not be displayed" error message. The IE default message comes up, but then goes away and what's left is a search engine page from the leech site that sent the certificate.

I already tried reverting back to IE 5.5, but that didn't help. There's got to be a page somewhere that I can replace.

Any help?

I think they hacked your registry. Take a look in this registry key, and see if the name is the same as the seach page for the leech site:

HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search

Mine starts with http://ie.search.msn.com

(I'm assuming you're familiar with Regedit, let me know if you need more detailed instructions)

If the leech site's address isn't there, try searching the whole registry for some unique piece of the address.

Well, I was first using regedt32, but now I realize it doesn't search as well as regedit (I'm on W2K). Even after replacing all instance of their URL in the registry (there were many), IE still redirected to their page when I entered a bad domain.

I decided to go to their site and see if there was a removal tool and, voila!, the leeches actually had one.

Will miracles never cease?

But, I'll give you guys the points as it was a good start. Although, I would really like to know how they did it. I do know that I accepted a certificate......the site is http://lop.com
