speech encoding/compression

Hi Folks,

I would appreciate if somebody could point me to literature on doing a basic thing like this on GNU/Linux
systems.

1) caputure speech from the mic
2) encode/compress
3) send it across the lan.

at the recieving end

4) decode/decompress
5) write to soundcard

sending across the lan is UDP packets that much I can figure, but it is the 1st and 2nd steps that are
bothering me.

regards
harsha

your best starting point is sound-list@redhat.com
the folks who write drivers for sound cards are monitoring and answering emails and they can PIN-POINT you to where most of the code you need located.
sending across the LAN is not a big deal, just take file and chunck it, read it as binary bolcks and send it.

the best network programming how-to, manual, is located at
http://www.ecst.csuchico.edu/~beej/guide/net/

write back and I, anyone, can help you with the transmitting and receiving on ethernet.
good luck
