using VPN yes... - i suggest getting a 4 port Linksys router with VPN and firewall built in. You can pick one up for between 100-200$

Install RAS as dial-in service. Configure the user you want to allow dial-in in AD Users & Computers. You should then be able to dial-in.

You could consider installing terminal services for remote controlling the machine..

If you are talking about having two network cards in your Advanced Server, one connected to your network and one connected to your Modem at your work, I suggest you go no further until you at least get a firewall in place.
