Hard Disc "not mounted"

On a Beige G3 I have added a PCI card to allow extra hard drives.  Currently a Quantum 4gig is the Master.  Slave is a Samsung 40gig partioned as 4, 10 gigs.

On Boot up the Quantum boots.  The Samsung does not even show on the desktop.  Apple profiler shows all four partitions  as "Note:  not mounted"

Also -- the factory installed CD -ROM drive does NOT show up with a non-boot disc in it.  A boot disc can be called up with the C key start.  But with the same disc in it the drive does not show on the desktop.  Apple Profiler says only "No mounted media inserted" even though there is.

I could go on and on about the ramifications of the this problem and how the drives seem on occasion to come and go.

I have re-seated the PCI board, all of my ram and the power supply cables to the drives as well as the ribbons themselves.  I have even switched the drives to be sure the ribbons are OK.  They seem to be.

I am about to consign the G3 to boat anchor status.

Its probably a configuration issue on your part. Im assuming these are IDE drives since youre talking about master and slave so check your cabling etc. Also, have you ever formatted the samsung drive for mac? That could be your problem right there. You need a HD utility to mount it, and format it, and it should then mount at startup.

As for the CD drive, im going to guess you dont have the CD drivers etc installed. Youre probably working with a butchered system folder which would explain ALOT.

Give the whole thing a fresh system folder, it sounds like it needs it and format your samsung drive with a disk utility.

To Weed-

Samsung formatted by Mac Driver update.

Brand New OS 8.6 install from Apple.

The whole problem remains.  Your comment is appreciated, but I'm afraid the problem goes deeper.  Is there a firmware instruction to look for drives?  Ånd is it possible it could be corrupted?

I can reformat the SAMSUNG, install new OS and it may or may not show up the first time I reboot.  Sometimes it even works for days.  Then suddenly it is not there anymore.  Very strange.

Addendum to my last comment.

All of a sudden and WITHOUT doing anything other than rebooting, the CD-ROM drive is working (for the moment, at least) and even playing a music CD.

Bach.

Stranger and stranger.

Sounds like a bad cable or a bad connection to the drive itself. Not a software issue since its intermittent.

Go to 9.1 in any case.

Thank you for your help.

Tomorrow I'll test your theories.

And as for 9.1.  I've no respect for the OS.  Never have heard a good word for it.

Goodnight

Whoever told you 9.1 was worse than 8.6 doesn't know what theyre talking about. 9.1 is a significant update both in bug fixes and features from 8.6. There are far fewer problems with it than 8.6 not to mention added device support etc. 9.2.2 is even better but i dont think you can go that high on a beige g3.

To Weed--

Your opinions re 9 are very strong.  I'll take them under consideration.

But first, the serious problems in my set up.  Twice in 12 hours I've downloaded from Apple the 8.6 update in case my old one is at fault.  Dammit!  Twice I'm told the 8.6 download is no good.  Quote:

"Problems were encountered reading the source file 'Tome.'  Installation cannot continue."

I'll get back to you.

In the meantime, thanks.

Well, I'm more and more sure that this Mac goes out at night and drinks blood.  Or, at least, shies away from garlic and crosses.

Sorry to give you so much trouble.  I'm still a long way from resolving the problems.

However, since you are so ready with advice and in the long run you may turn out to be 100% right, I've decided to pay you anyway.

Thanks,

I can a little speak & write an Englsh.
Maybe, I think that this is the hardwere problem.
So I expirenced, My case was a Slave HD(IDE) on a Beige G3, too.
Then I called on the Mac master.  There's answer was "It does not guarantee".
Apple's comments was "It does not guarantee" too  which a internal HD is a higher 8GB & 30MB which editing a documents size on a Beige G3 in JAPAN.
There is an inconvenient on first stage type G3's mother boad.
Maybe when Slave HD remove , the factory installed CD -ROM show on the desktop & can be called up with the C key start.
Becuse confricted the internal Slave HD & the CD-ROM drive.

If you want to use this internal HD, you might as well make a forming SCSI HD by external HD kits.
I think that this might be safety. I could use it.
This HD might be broken, so you would check this HD on the another Mac.

Good luck.
