3-Hard drive got reformated and I restored the full system from tape using microsoft backup(We had the last backup)

4-Everything wroked fine expect Sql server, it could not rerstore the sql server. Some files were missing in dynamic libraray.

5-I went to add/remove program and remove the sql server 2000. It was success full

6-Trying to reinstall the Sql server. it fails every time. It gives the message at the and that "Setup failed to configure the server.   Refer to the server error logs and C:\WINNT\sqlstp.log for more information."

This is the end of sqlstp.log file.

The cnfgsvr.exe needs to connect using a network protocol that can run in local shared memory. If, from your previous installation, you setup an alias in the client network utility program that specifies a protocol that can not run in local shared memory, cnfgsvr will attempt to use it anyway, and fail. Delete you alias in the client network utility, and you should be able to complete the install.

I will try your solution.
As long as I remember I could not run client network utility and it would gave me the error. ddl not found in dynamic libraray ....
Please do not lock the question. I will look at it by noon and get back to you. If it works I'll accpet  it. but leave it opne for other suggestion. I am pretty sure that I can not run client network utility any more. as I said. i rmeove dthe whole sql server that is why there is no client network utility any more. Just in case I will look at it again.

Thanks

User regedit and go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE-->SOFTWARE-->Microsoft-->MSSQLServer-->Client-->ConnectTo

and remove the line with the alias for your server.

Hi,

Have you tried a regclean or similar utiltiy?

Do you have a spare server? Suggest that you try restoring the system and reinstall SQL ...

What else was on the server? If it was just SQL, possibly the quickest resolution is to format, reinstall windows, reinstall SQL, restore the datbase files from tape. You may have the actual files, or copies of the databse backups. In one case you reattach the database files and then sort out the users, inthe other you restore from the files restored from tape ...

I have not used regclean. Please advice.

About reinstalling windows, that is what I am trying  not to do. I have the last full backup of system files and my hard drives on tape. Actually this is what happend, My system got messed up and I tried to restore it from tape. As you know full restore does not work properly most of the time. this is a web server that has Sql server on it too. (Nothing else.)
everything got restored properly except sql server. It gave me some dll not found and stuff like that when I restart the system.
I have a backup form my database separately.
I am trying to restore the sql on this system and restore my database on it.
I know something is not cleaned up in reg but I can not find it.
Any more idea?

You did not go to the correct key. There should be one named "MSSQLServer" in addition to the "Microsft Sql Server" one.

I removed that one later.
I found a document in Mcrosoft primior web site about how to uninstall sql server manually. It was saying ot delete both keys and I did.

Hi,

Regclean is I believe available from Microsoft.

It removes old entries from the registry.

It looks like the configure server part of the setup requires SQL to be running, I would try running setup with the k=dbg setting, and when the message asking if you want ton configure the server appears go to control panel and ensure that the service is started before pressing YES
