MS Word Attachments changing their format

Im using Outlook 2000 build 9.0.0.2711 which I just installed recently on my win98 machine.

I realise now that when I send any smallMS word file as an attachment to say my hotmail account, the hotmail account shows the file as winmail.dat and not xxxx.doc

But the attachments seems to remain intact when I email it to myself and view it again in outlook.

What can be the cause of this problem?

THanks

Dan
