Do you have or have installed any gaming software recently?. If you have, then this might be the problem...

Give us some error messages so we won't have to guess at what program is causing the problem.

try msconfig as there may be a background program interfering with explorer.

go to
start / run / msconfig
startup
remove ticks from all entries except 'system tray'.
click ok and reboot
does the problem still occur?

When you get the error relating to explorer click on the details option to get more (surprise surprise)  ... detail.

have you installed Windows 98 over the top of itself? You won't lose any application data or settings, the installer will just overwrite the Windows files (something like doing SFC, but fixes some problems SFC doesn't fix)

Give it a go!

If it's fixed, either accept the comment that helped the most or delete the question.  Everyone needs to help in keeping things cleaned up around here.
