Convert Video Tape to avi or mpg2

What is the best solution for converting video tapes (from a video recorder) from analog to digital on my computer (mpg2 or avi) and then digital to analog to record on tape.  I have s-video output and input on my vcr.

I have seen mpg files that have very high quality and would like to make my own.  I have a p4 1500 computer with 512 meg of ram.  I have firewire and use that to create files from my digital video camera.  I get pretty good results playing the analog video into my dv camera and then into my computer, but that is a hassle.

I am running Windows XP and that might be a limiting factor.

Thanks in advance for any help.

It may be a hassle, but it works and for you it works well. Stick with what works.

donb1-

I would recommend a product such as the Dazzle DV-Bridge.  It is not a cheap answer, but it is the best way to capture analog video to your computer for digital editing and/or creation of VCDs or DVDs, AVIs, MPGs, or simply re-edit and record back to analog tape (to a vcr).  There are also some video cards on the market, mostly made by ATI (All-in-Wonder for one) that capture video from analog devices.  Lastly, there are specific PCI cards also made by ATI that capture video for you.  These may be a more affordable solution for you, but in my experience it is best to have a specific device for a task such as this and it performs best that way.  Visit the Dazzle website for more details on the Dazzle DV-Bridge.  It uses Firewire connectivity.

Hope this helps
