opscan5 will not scan in windows 2000 pro, what should the com port setting or else should i try?

I looked extensively for a manual with details on the Net for your model of Scanner, without luck.  The manual or whatever documentation of configuration SW you got with it should tell you which serial port or parallel port should be used, and should also advise you if unique baud rates or stop bits are to be configured.

I've seen nothing unique for Windows 2000 and this Scanner in any of my research so far; but sure spent a lot of time trying to find your solution.  Listening further for feedback from you.

I was also baffled why I could find other opscan models, but not model 5; here's one example

Here, I found Model 5 - includes baud rate, nothing Windows 2000 specific

Configuring the Software for Use with an NCS Pearson Scanner  

With MICROTEST Q™ Assessment System Software  
There are a few steps to take to ensure that the scanner and the MICROTEST Q software work well together.

Configuring the OpScan® 2, 3 or 4 Scanner
Running the OpScan 2, 3 or 4 Scanner in SCAN MODE
Configuring the OpScan 5, 6, 7 or 8 Scanner

Configuring the Software
Beginning with the software settings, open your MICROTEST Q 5.x software to the Administration View Screen.
From the tool bar, select OPTIONS, SCANNER ENTRY and then CONFIGURE.
Verify that the CONFIGURATION choices are:

Model 2, 3, 4 etc. for the scanner type

Port COM 1 or COM 2 - this may need to be altered later

Baud 9600

Databits 7

Parity Odd

Stopbits 2

Then OK the selection to save and exit. Continue to exit back to the Administration View screen.
Configuring the Scanner – OpScan® 2, 3 or 4 scanner
Hold down both Blue Buttons at the same time, until the words "Background Menu" appear. This will take anywhere from 10 to 20 seconds.
When the type of scanner appears, push Continue.
At "sheet count" push Continue.
At "Utilities" push Yes.
At "Top head calibrate" push No.
At "Bot head calibrate" push No.*
At "Com Configuration" push Yes.
Use the NCS Standard setting by pushing Yes. When asked for the "Baud Rate" push No at 38400, push No at 19200 and push Yes at 9600. Scanner will then say "Configuration Complete". Push Quit.
At "Display Brightness" push No.
Then at "Exit Utilities" push Yes .
Then at "Exit Background" push Yes.
Running the OpScan 2, 3 or 4 Scanner in SCAN MODE
To ensure that your OpScan 2, 3, or 4 scanner will run SCAN MODE when communicating with the MICROTEST Q software, you need to set it to its default settings:

Hold down both Blue Buttons at the same time, until the words "Background Menu" appear. This will take anywhere from 10 to 20 seconds.
When the type of scanner appears, push Continue.
At "sheet count" push Continue.
At "Utilities" push No.
At "Defaults" push Yes.
At "Display Comm Status" push Yes.
At "Print " option, push No.
At "Image Mode" push Yes (unless you are using the NCS scanner for another application that requires 3000 Emulation Mode, then you would push No).
At "Power Up Aux Mode" push No.
At "Exit Defaults" push Yes.
At "Exit Background" push Yes.

Needed: ONE Host Port Communications Configuration Sheet


Hold down the left button on the scanner and turn the scanner on at the same time.
Continue to hold the button down until "Setup" appears. Then let go of the button and "Utilities?" should appear on the display panel. Press "yes"
At "Calibrate top read head" push No.
At "Calibrate bottom read head" push No.*
At "Configure Communications" push Yes.
Place configuration sheets into the hopper and then push Start. Once the sheet is scanned, the scanner will then say "Configuration Complete". Push Continue.
When the scanner display goes back to "Utilities?" turn the scanner off, let it sit for 10 seconds and then turn it back on.
