i need to add an icon to a console application

Then add an icon resource to an .RC file and include that in the link. A console-mode application is just a Win32 executable like any other--you can even create windows from a console mode application if you feel like it!

(This is assuming you don't actually mean a 16-bit DOS mode application, for which the above does not apply).
