Hard disk problem

I have made a mistake by using a differet AVG antivirus Rescue Disk from another computer to a computer that I suspect have been virus infected. I have used this fdd to restore the system. Now this Quantum HDD 40 gh only report as a 3.5 gb HDD. I would like to know if there is anyway I can recover this 40 GB Hdd back to normal. This will be my sad day if I lost all data from the HDD.

Lost and Found
Lost and Found recovers data from drives that have been formatted, lost partitions through accidental
deletion, etc. This applies to FAT or FAT32 partitions only. If the disk is still capable of spinning,
there is a chance of recovery.
Lost and Found only performs read operations on the affected hard disk. Many utilities attempt to repair
the hard disk and corrupt data in the process. Since Lost and Found only performs read operations, it
does not risk the integrity of the data on the disk.

Thank you very much for the information. However, if there is any way I could restore the HDD system info as what it is without using any 3rd software.

I was only using another recover disk for another computer by mistake.

jwlchan,

No there is no other way.  Your fat table has been overwritten.  Your old data may still be on there...but the Fat table is now displaying other information.  You will either have to use a third party software or, deal with the loss.  That is all I can say.  I wish I could give you better news.  But there isn't any.

Here is a comparison of ontrack's vs lost and found etc....

jwlchan,

I am sorry, I think that your data has been overwritten.  If none of the above lists of software can help you recover your overwritten partition, then that is all i can do to help you.  You will need to reformat and reinstall your software.  I am sorry, I wish there was another answer.

However what was the error message you got when using the easy recovery software?

jwlchanAuthor Commented:
I cannot recall what was the error message now as this was a very long time ago.

ComTech,

Why was this an abandonned question?  His last response was today at 2:46pm.....
Also not to mention that I did answer his question.  It may not be the answer he wants or wanted but he asked:
"I would like to know if there is anyway I can recover this 40 GB Hdd back to normal."

After having him try some recovery software and that it was not resolved using that route, plus i gave him advice and things to try and even asked questions that he could not answer because of this reason: "I cannot recall what was the error message now as this was a very long time ago."
How am I suppose to help him with that?
Anyway the comment I made that answered his question above was this:
"I am sorry, I think that your data has been overwritten.  If none of the above lists of software can help you recover your overwritten partition, then that is all i can do to help you.  You will need to reformat and reinstall your software.  I am sorry, I wish there was another answer."

I am not satisfied with the closing of this question.  I think it needs reviewing, or the user at least finds out more information on this.  If the error message that was seen by the user comes forth, it may help us go forward.  Also him saying that he forgot because it was a long time ago...how much time has that been?  About a month and a few weeks maybe?  for him to respond to me....

Sorry guys, my mistake.  During this clean up, the Experts leave us questions with reccomendation, with 200-300 questions long, and unfortunanly they had transposed a couple of numbers.

But I take responsibility for moving too quickly, and did not read the question before placing it in PAQ.

If you guys want to continue, I can leave the points for whomever in a seperate queston, tied to this one.  I which we had the abibility to re-open a PAQ'd question, but their is not.

Let me know what you want to do, and I will handle it for you.

I think there was only just come out as a error message and there was nothing further information form Easy
Recovery at all.

On 6 June I post a comment stated that I have been waiting for an answer for so long so I decided to cancel.

On 7 July I send message to cancel the question.

I am very sorry if I upset anybody because I cannot have an answer. However, I could forward this 50 points if anyone feel that this is very important.

jwlchan,  REREAD all of comtech's comments and mine.  As you can already see, he has refunded the pointsand closed the question already.  If you follow the coversation between Comtech and me, you will notice that he said he already closed and returned the points...he also said he would give points if requested.  I said no....End of story end of questions.  I was just trying to get to the bottom of the question.  Anyway ComTech confirmation is needed from you.  Jwlchan does not understand the comments or did not read them.

Oh and either that ComTech stole the points since he is the one that has "ANSWERED" the question.  Hence the Accepted Answer Line says:
From: ComTech Date: 07/12/2002 04:08PM PST

But would not make sense for him to do so since he is a moderator and probably doesnt need or care about the points.
