making scripts inaccessible to visitors

If I put my scripts in a directory in my www tree, can someone download it from there?  If so how can I prevent that?  Can I put my scripts in a directory above the www tree?

they can't download them, since every http request will be handled by the webserver which will execute the script and return the html, in stead of returning the script itself.
