Lotus Notes R5 as MAPI Service Provider on NT\Win2K

Hi

We have a Win2K network (NT4 & Win2K clients) and Notes R5 as our mail system (don't ask why - political decision).

We have been trying to use the 'Workgroup' tool in MS Project which emails project information amongst registered users. Normally to get MAPI functionality for other apps with Notes we have installed an Outlook client on the PC, in fact when you try the 'Workgroup' tool in MS Project it will tell you that Outlook or Exchange is required. But the short story is that we cannot get it to work successfully when set up like this.

I have seen a message on the IBM-Lotus site forum talking about the difference between making Notes the 'default mail client' (via settings in MS IE) to enable apps to use the 'Send To' tool, and making Notes the 'MAPI service provider' which makes Notes the mail transport that sits underneath the MAPI APIs - generally used by programs that provide a complete mail UI.

The 'Send To' tool does work in Project, while the 'MAPI service provider' to provide the underlying mail transport sounds like what the MS Project 'Workgroup' tool requires. The forum message also mentioned setting options in the 'Custom' install option to obtain this functionality.

Can someone please provide some advice\background\help on this - anyone achieved something similar ?

cheers
Tom.

I have not done this, but I have set up something similar for another program.

I would Install the POP3 Service on your Notes server and then set up the Outlook to read / send mail using pop3.

Check the Admin Help for info on POP3.
You need to set up an Internet password in the person doc to get this working.

I hope this helps !

What does it mean to be "Always On"?

Is your cloud always on? With an Always On cloud you won't have to worry about downtime for maintenance or software application code updates, ensuring that your bottom line isn't affected.

Thanks for all the assistance. My colleagues seem to have found a simple fix - just re-install the Notes client after all other installs are finished and this seems to get the MAPI layers correct and the required process works.

Anyway, thank you for the points :-)
